Olivari-Handles as an artwork
In its century-old history, Olivari has always sought out the maximum in quality, relying on the creativity of the best designers and architects.
The company presented at SALONE DEL MOBILE 2019, four new handles designed by illustrious names of the international architecture and design - Antonio Citterio, Carlo Colombo, Max Pajetta, Luca Casini - together with two "best of" handles by Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid.
The stand was designed by the architects Calvi Brambilla, who chose the theme "The art interprets the design" and told us: "We were inspired especially by the spatialist art of Agostino Bonalumi, who used monochrome extroflexed paintings with shapes inserted behind the canvas, so as to create light and shadow effects in relation to the inclination of the light source. Therefore the handles as well, presented not only as a design object, but also as "works of art", in which the characteristic and individualizing construction lines are highlighted for each one ".
“I like door handles with a certain understatement. "Milano" is conceived as a timeless handle, an evergreen.
The attention to the millimeter in the thickness and to the tenth in the curvatures allowed to obtain a precise sensorial and visual perception of solidity and classicism.”
"The door handle Lugano was born from a project for an entrepreneur friend’s house, for which I wanted to create a new model, with character and "custom-made".
We worked hard with Olivari, with subsequent refinements to give the handle a sober and elegant appearance, in character with the architecture and the furnishings.”
“I wanted to create a simple but elegant handle with a full-bodied and comfortable grip. I think I obtained a good result with Diva, where the surfaces are generated by two opposing convex curves moving from the rosette to the tip of the handle forming a curve that gradually softens.”
Antonio Olivari for Max Pajetta
“Having known the architect for years, his very rational and controlled style, we were surprised when he presented his prototype in white plaster, which expressed a strong and dynamic concept. We loved it, it was a concept that was missing in our collection.
Now I can say that it was one of the projects that engaged us the most, with many, many prototypes, in search of an aesthetic balance that harmonised technical production and ergonomic needs.
We are satisfied with the result and have chosen an evocative name for this handle, which immediately expresses the idea of its shape ".
“An archetypal handle that comes from the simplicity of the square section. The geometry elementariness lends itself to optimal support for a series of variations: starting from the different metal finishes that generate innumerable possibilities of characterization and impact in different contexts.”
“Inspired by Zaha Hadid’s first project in New York City, a residential building located beside High Line Park, the door handle reflects the chevron pattern of the apartment block’s façade. The design, a strong shape accentuated by delicate curves, follows the same experimental framework that each of Hadid’s dynamic and innovative projects have been built on.
Extracted from architectural elements of horizontality and symmetry of the New York building, the handle’s body takes upon a powerful, curving form, which enhances the ergonomic relationship between the hand and the item, optimising it through a series of delicate carving-out of the object’s volume.”
