We visited the Salone del Mobile in Milan - 55th annual furniture fair
This year, the spring in Milan was marked by the largest furniture fair - Salone del Mobile...
Like every time so far, for the jubilee 55th time in a row, Salone del Mobile in Milan was a gathering place for creative minds of talented and potential young designers, who came with a desire to show everything they’ve got, but also to see the work of their colleagues from different spheres. Salone del Mobile is the epicenter of creative designers, as well as one of the most important events in the industry of design and furniture, and as such, breaks all records of attendance. We had a chance to be among the 372,151 visitors who have seen it firsthand and the first to find out all about the new trends in this sphere, which affects all aspects of our lives.
Although this was not the first time that we visit this fair, what makes us feel fascinated each time is the size of the exhibition area in which it is held, as well as everything that surrounds such a big event as the largest furniture fair in the world, and great city of Milan, which was transformed into one big design stage during those few days. The city embraced a large number of exhibitors who were doing their best to make the superlative showcase of their innovations and attract the attention of all visitors. Fortunately, the weather had served us well during the few days that we were in Milan, and aside from visiting the fair, we had the opportunity to see what the ‘Welcome project’ looks like, which Salone del Mobile organized on the territory of the whole city, in cooperation with art schools and universities of the city.
After a walk around town, we quickly realized that the creative energy flowed away from the fairgrounds and occupied the whole Milano - practically every person you could see on the streets of this city had some connection with the fair - some have participated in it, and some were waiting for the weekend because then, according to tradition, open days are held, when everyone can come and see what the best brands from around the world have prepared, especially domestic brands from Italy.
The furniture industry appears to not have been affected by any crisis, because every year, it offers all creative, luxurious, sophisticated and modern novelties, with incredible stylization, finishing touches and decorations that’s in line with everything else. When you first step into the space of the Milan Fair, the energy, speed, noise and the crowd, as well as impatience and excitement of all visitors and exhibitors, will simply get under your skin. Like every time so far, we have come ready, with a plan and clear objectives.
As the exhibition of kitchen and bathroom equipment was held this year, and is held every other year, all our attention was at first devoted to that particular section of the fair. Technology, amazing designs, objects with multiple features and stunning aesthetics were all over the place, so it was very difficult to decide which booth to visit first.
Primarily, company Snaidero attracted our attention, which has cooperated with the Pininfarina brand, famous for its design and redesign of superior luxury cars. To say that the fruit of their collaboration was something incredibly luxurious and smooth, but then muted and minimalist is an understatement. The new Aria kitchen which was presented as the work of these brands is perhaps the pinnacle of refined design in the kitchen.
Pininfarina brand has introduced its own collection, called Home Pininfarina design, which proves that the interior can at the same time be ultra-modern and luxurious, minimalist and elegant. The final details which are at the heart of their each design must be seen with the naked eye and touch by hand, in order to comprehend all their beauty.
Officine Gullo is a brand that we visit during each Milan's Fair, and they have, as always, presented traditional kitchen design, custom built, offered in several versions, to suit everyone's needs. And they are really such - unique, functional, but also aesthetically appealing.
After a short break, which we needed in order to properly absorb all the energy and creative charge of the Eurocucina, we went to the section of the fair, which was dedicated to bathrooms and bathroom equipment - International Bathroom Exhibition. The amount of different finishing details, colors, styles and designs that we have seen after the first steps made in this hall was mesmerizing. We had the same problem as on the Eurocucina exhibition – how to choose our path and the stand which we’ll visit first, when each offers something new and unprecedented, incredibly attractive and somewhat unexpected?
In the crowd of stands, we spotted THG, the brand that we've talked about several times, and it was clear to us that they are ideal place to start our adventure through the land of bathroom miracles. Their designs are always impeccable and prestigious, designed so that the innocent ritual of washing your face and hands is turned into a time of day that you love the most, with maximum enjoyment. We had the opportunity to see some new materials that can be used for floor and wall coverings in the bathroom, which tells us that the new trend on the horizon - uniformed, elegant and minimalist bathrooms, which will captivate you with their simplicity and style.
There was also the xLux exhibition, dedicated, as its name suggests, to the luxurious pieces of furniture where you can see everything - exaggerated, flamboyant and ornate pieces, as well as those with a unique form, sleek lines and sophisticated elegance. This is the part of the fair that you visit with real joy and pleasure. But, it is necessary to have a lot of time for this Fair Pavilion, to carefully review all the offered details and finishing touches.
In xLux part of the fair, which occupied a modest room of one hall, we were most impressed by the Versace brand, and their home division, which offered creative design solutions for every room in your home. With their furniture, you can give your home, whether it's a house or apartment, the appearance that will be better than those shown on many magazine covers that deal with this topic. Since we had a limited time and only two days to explore this fair, we had to just head on, because a large number of innovations was waiting to be discovered.
Given that the Salone del Mobile.Milano fair is dedicated to young people and talents who have yet to make their mark in the field of design, SaloneSatelite is part of the fair, which must be visited. In this part of the fair, you have the opportunity to see how young people think and how far they can go with their creativity when all their passion is pointed toward the creation of innovation. Within SaloneSatellite show, the prize for the best design is awarded, and in this way, young people are given the ideal opportunity to start their own business in this sector. This year, the award ceremony was held for the seventh time, and the winner was Studio Philipp Beisheim from Germany, with its "Inflatable Sidetable" inflatable table design, which perfectly suits the modern society, as well as the needs of humanity. Second prize went to Japanese studio Bouillon, while the third also went to Germany, to Studio Nito, for their design Bobina Chair. The jury that decides the winners is made up of the best and most respected experts in this field, and the award ceremony was attended by Matteo Renzi, Prime Minister of Italy.
Rooms.Novel Living Concepts is a new event which was held for the first time this year, as a unique exhibition of the art of interior architecture, and the curator of the event was neither more nor less than Beppe Finesse. This exhibition will last until 12th of September, as part of the 21st International Triennale exhibition, Triennale di Milano.
If you ever set off to visit this fair, be prepared. Bring comfortable clothes and good will, because after a whole day spent here, and we give you our word that you will stay here from opening to closing, you will be exhausted from enjoying the fascinating scenes. After this adventure, we headed on Leonardo Hotel, where we were greeted by comfortable rooms, friendly staff and free time to think about everything that we have seen, and imagine what will Salone del Mobile in Milan offer next year...
