ZALABA DESIGN:New Bauhaus at FuoriSalone 2018
BM Communication is honored to tell you the beautiful story about the family business ZALABA DESIGN - a Zurich based design studio specialized in customized furniture production, interior and exhibition design.
The company is in its third generation being managed by the young designer Ginger Zalaba. She has taken it upon herself to initiate her new furniture collection LOVE in honor of her grandfather Otto Kolb - a Swiss born architect and industrial designer.
After World War II many Bauhaus members like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer emigrated to the Unites States. They taught at Harvard and the Institute of Design, which was founded in Chicago by Laszlo Maholy-Nagy and became known as The New Bauhaus.
Otto Kolb was a part of this design movement. He taught design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago during the 1940s. During the 1950s and 60s, Kolb produced a limited edition of modern furniture. One of his chairs is exhibited in the Louvre in Paris. Otto Kolb’s furniture has been featured in auctions held by both Sotheby’s and Quittenbaum.
The pieces of the LOVE collection are as light as air and inspired by Otto Kolb’s LOVE chair prototype produced in 1950, which was sufficiently eye-catching and featured in an early Playboy Magazine. The success led to a working relationship during the 60s with Walter Knoll.
The LOVE chairs and tables fit beautifully into retail and hospitality spaces and inevitably become the focal point of any scene. Pure modern geometric design characterizes the work of Ginger Zalaba. In her perception good design is a sculptural interpretation of functionality. Combining minimalism with materialism has resulted in new and original forms. Zalaba’s pieces are hand crafted in Italy, ranging different leather colors and steel finishings.
“The Love collection is my contribution to Nordic Design. I mixed it with New Bauhaus to emphasize my love affair with steel and leather. Combining function, form and materials in it’s simplest, most beautiful way. The collection is sleek and sexy and will flood your space with joy.” Ginger Zalaba
The LOVE collection that will be presented at FuoriSalone in the spaces of the Magna Pars Hotel in Via Tortona 15 in Milan - 17-22 April 2018.
