Winter presents challenges that are unique only to the frosty conditions of the season.
Paghera in Dubai: The Palm
Middle East is still an extremely dynamic market as far as building is concerned and it represents one of the widest areas where you can build offshore.
Dubai, having just 60 km of coast to develop, had to look elsewhere in order to meet the demand for housing and hotels overlooking the sea.
In this field, among the most important projects, we mention “The World, Palm Jebel Ali e Palm De Palm Jumeirah”.
Whenever you think about Dubai and about its wonders, three things come to your mind: Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa and the artificial island of Palm Jumeirah, a marvel of engineering and one of the most incredible views of the city. It is a palm shaped artificial island which was created by applying the technique of the reclamation of land from sea.
It was defined as “The eighth wonder of the world”. Undoubtedly, it was a historical and crucial tile of the birth of Dubai myth (UAE).
This project, one of the kind, implied many international groups, such as Paghera, which was selected as landscape designer of the island and of the public/private area of the hotel and of the trade centre. Several feasibility studies were carried out as well as an accurate selection of technical building and the best tree essences, paying a special attention to appearance and maintenance cost reduction.
As usual, Paghera’s remarkable knowledge of the local vegetation and local climate contributed to the excellent success of this operation of landscape design.
The company, which was involved in this project, is Nakheel, one of the most important builders in the whole Middle East. It was the
first one of the three palm shaped islands meant to adorn Dubai coastline: the two others are Palm Jebel Ali, with the same shape but much bigger and still under construction, and Palm Deira, which originally should be even bigger than Palm Jebel Ali; but, after the financial crisis which gripped Dubai at the end of the year 2000, the
project underwent a sudden stop and was then considerably scaled down and changed in Deira Islands. Palm Jumeirah as its name suggests, is located in the area of Jumeirah: the building started in June 2001 and the first residential units were finished in 2006.
In October 2007 Palm Jumeirah was the biggest island in the world and 75% of the real estates were already ready, 500 families already lived there and two years later 28 luxury hotels of the most important international chains were already opened, such as Kempinski, Fairmont and Sofitel, as well as hotels that make your mind boggle such as Atlantis, Oceana Residence, Waldorf Astoria or Kingdom of Sheba.
The undisputed icon of Palm Jumeirah is the hotel Atlantis, built on its top and reachable by car or during a tour by the Dubai Monorail, the scenic monorail which covers the trunk of the palm along the length. It is a luxury hotel with a really wonderful design, with a huge Arab arch in the middle which gives you the impression of a hole in the heart of the structure. The hotel is equipped with a private beach and with all the appropriate amenities; undoubtedly, it is worthy to visit it just from outside. Another attraction of Palm Jumeirah is the Aquaventure, a water park which was built just next to the hotel Atlantis, reachable by the Dubai Monorail, too. There
are several attractions for adults as well as for children, several swimming pools and water games and a beach with all the comforts. The leafy branches of Palm Jumeirah, instead, are private: several villas are built there, which are worth millions of euros; each of them has a view on the street (with a garden) and a view on its own private beach.
